RunnerUp is a free and open source run tracker for Android that records your running, cycling, and other sport activities using your phone's GPS. Under continuous development as a community project since 2012, it delivers the core experience of commercial trackers like Strava without ads, accounts, or subscriptions: detailed pace, distance, time, heart rate, and elevation statistics, plus graphs and maps to review your routes after each workout.
Training features are where RunnerUp stands out. It runs effective interval workouts modeled after Garmin's workout format, lets you do free runs against a target pace or heart rate zone, and offers highly configurable audio cues that announce your progress at intervals you define. The app pairs with Bluetooth SMART (BLE) heart rate monitors — ANT+ support is included in the Play Store version — uses your phone's step sensor and barometer for distance and elevation, and a Wear OS companion app puts basic workout controls on your wrist.
RunnerUp is privacy-friendly by design: there is no user registration and no tracking, so your workout history stays on your device. When you do want to share, one-click auto-upload sends finished activities to Strava, Runalyze, RunKeeper, RunningAHEAD, or a WebDAV server, and favorite workouts can be shared with friends by email. Get it from Google Play, F-Droid (see the FAQ for differences), or GitHub releases — the source code is licensed under GPL-3.0.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is RunnerUp really free?
Yes — completely. RunnerUp is open source under the GPL-3.0 license, with no ads, no in-app purchases, and no user account or registration required. You can install it from Google Play or F-Droid, and anyone can inspect or contribute to the code on GitHub.
Does RunnerUp sync with Strava?
Yes. After you authorize an account in the settings, RunnerUp automatically uploads finished activities to Strava with a single click. It also supports Runalyze, RunKeeper, RunningAHEAD, and WebDAV, and some services additionally support downloading history and feed updates — see the sync wiki page for details.
Which heart rate monitors work with RunnerUp?
RunnerUp supports Bluetooth SMART (BLE) heart rate chest straps, including many Polar and Zephyr sensors. The Google Play version also supports ANT+ monitors. You can configure personal heart rate zones, and audio cues will alert you when you leave your target zone mid-workout.
What is the difference between the Play Store and F-Droid versions?
Both builds come from the same open source code, but the F-Droid build removes features that depend on non-free libraries or API keys: the MapBox map layer, the Wear OS companion app, ANT+ heart rate support, and Runalyze/Dropbox upload. The two versions can even be installed side by side, and feature releases usually land on both.
Can I use RunnerUp for interval training?
Yes. RunnerUp includes a workout designer modeled after Garmin's interval workouts, so you can build structured sessions with repeats, recovery periods, and target pace or heart rate segments. Audio cues coach you through each step of the workout, and you can share your favorite workouts with friends by email.
